What happened to the Liberty Mutual and TruStage offer?
On December 1, 2021, Navy Federal announced member access to Liberty Mutual auto and home insurance through TruStage. That same announcement now carries a notice: the service became unavailable on January 1, 2026. The original announcement text sits below the notice and still describes the old member discounts, which is why the page reads as an active offer at a glance. Read the notice first. [1]
The notice ends the service, not necessarily your policy. It says nothing about canceling coverage already purchased through the program. If you hold one of those policies, call the insurer named on your policy documents and confirm three things: that the policy is active, what happens at renewal, and whether any discount continues. [1]
Navy Federal’s own insurance page now lists life insurance and Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP). The auto-and-home quote offer is gone from it. [2]
Is the Newtek agency page the replacement?
Nothing in the Navy Federal and Newtek pages reviewed here establishes that Newtek replaced the discontinued TruStage program. There is no replacement date and no transfer announcement — only a Newtek Insurance Agency page carrying Navy Federal branding. Treat it as one more contact option rather than a continuation of the old offer, and do not assume the former insurer or discount carries over.
The page lists auto under personal insurance and business auto under commercial insurance, and the agency says it works with more than 40 carriers across its offerings. That figure covers the agency’s insurance offerings overall; it does not tell you how many auto insurers are available to you. [3] The page also sits inside a Newtek partner area presented as business services, so the first thing to settle is whether it handles personal-auto business for individual members at all. [9]
Before you use the inquiry form, get three answers in writing: whether the agency currently handles personal-auto requests for Navy Federal members in your state, which insurer would issue the policy, and whether any membership discount applies to it. One practical note on the form itself — the submission disclosure includes consent to marketing messages about other services. [3]
Does a Navy Federal auto loan include car insurance?
No. A loan and an insurance policy are separate contracts, and neither one buys the other. What the loan does is set conditions on the policy you bring to it. Navy Federal’s Title & Lien Process Guide, NFCU 33, tells borrowers to have their insurance company list Navy Federal as loss payee—the party named to receive covered loss payments because it holds a financial interest in the car—on both collision and comprehensive coverage. The guide sets an acceptable deductible of $1,000 or less. [6]
A cheaper quote still needs to meet that $1,000 ceiling. If it comes with a $2,000 deductible—the amount you pay toward a covered claim—it falls outside Navy Federal’s stated loan requirements. Ask your insurer to check the physical-damage coverages and the lender listing against your loan documents before you change either one. For the broader decision, see our guide to coverage on a financed or owned used car.
If a lender sends you an insurance notice, work out which product it refers to before you assume you are covered to drive. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that force-placed insurance—coverage a lender buys when the borrower lacks the insurance the loan requires—protects the lender and is charged to the borrower. It does not cover you the way your own policy does. Contact the lender about the notice, and send proof of coverage if you already carry what the loan requires. [7]
Is Navy Federal’s GAP the same as car insurance?
No. Navy Federal’s GAP is a debt-cancellation agreement: it cancels an eligible loan shortfall after a covered total loss or unrecovered theft. It is optional, and the FAQs require the vehicle’s primary insurance to stay in place, because the shortfall it cancels is what remains after the insurer pays. The August 2026 version of the agreement applies to enrollments made on or after August 29, 2026. [5] [8]
The current product page quotes a $499 enrollment fee for eligible vehicles and says the benefit can include up to $1,000 of the deductible. The enrollment fee pays for GAP; it is not an annual car-insurance premium or a quote for your vehicle. Financing the fee rolls it into the loan and adds interest to it, and Navy Federal says California Active Duty and Active Reserve Duty servicemembers cannot finance it at all. [4]
Check the eligibility rules and exclusions before adding it. The product page excludes commercial use, including ridesharing and food delivery. The agreement caps the GAP amount and excludes specified charges and past-due payments, so an outstanding balance is not a promise that every dollar of it clears. [4] [8] Our guide to how GAP works walks through the loan-shortfall calculation.
If you already have a Navy Federal GAP plan, check your agreement and any notices changing its terms. Ask Navy Federal which version applies to your enrollment. After a total loss, the auto claim goes to your insurer and the GAP claim goes to Navy Federal; its FAQs list the settlement documents that claim needs, and the agreement is explicit that regular loan payments remain due while it is processed. [5] [8]
What to confirm before you buy a policy
- Name the product. Ask for a personal-auto quote if you need coverage to drive. Ask about GAP separately if you need loan protection. They are different contracts and one does not include the other.
- Identify who issues the policy. Get the insurer’s name, coverage limits, deductibles, policy term, and effective date in writing before you pay.
- Check it against the loan. If Navy Federal finances the car, have the insurer confirm the loss-payee listing and the $1,000-or-less deductible on collision and comprehensive.
- Verify any discount. Ask which current membership discount applies to your quote. Do not price a new policy from the discontinued Liberty Mutual offer.
- Confirm coverage is active. Keep the policy documents and payment confirmation together. If you are replacing an existing policy, line up the effective dates with both insurers so you are never uninsured between them.
Our car-insurance application checklist covers the information to gather before that call. One search note: NFCU is simply an abbreviation for Navy Federal Credit Union, so results using it describe these same services.
